Wow Wow Wow! Our trip was amazing and Captain Stephen was a fantastic guide, He was there early, friendly, easy-going, and very knowledgeable about the island. Highly Recommended! Our trip was in the middle of July so the perfect time to see whales. The first spot he recommended we saw a couple humpback whales right away and throughout the entire trip they were constantly breaching. Don't forget to charge your batteries because your cameras will be on the entire time. Can't recommend Captain Stephen and this tour enough. The perfect way to end the evening, would definitely come back. The HIGHLIGHT of our two-week trip. Thank you again!

Captain Stephen really cares about providing a wonderful experience for his whale-watching guests! He offers a variety of snacks, hot drinks and personal thermoses, his cabin has comfortable seating at a table and a wood-burning stove for the most cozy experience you could hope for when you take a break from being out on the deck. He is happy to share local lore, give tips on other aspects of your Kodiak visit, take you to visit a bunch of sea lions with unexpected personality, and is beyond gracious. I highly recommend his AirBnB “The Catch” as well.

Zonda from New York

Super personal experience and a great time watching whales right near the boat. The boat is brand new, rides great, is super comfortable and a great place to watch whales and other animals. We saw whales, puffins and much more. Highly recommended.

What's the boat like?

The “Evan-Stephen” (pronounced even-steven) is a 28’ long by 11’ wide aluminum cabin cruiser landing craft. There is a large deck in the front for viewing and seating for 6 in the cabin. The cabin features a table, 360 degree view, and a wood burning stove for those wetter days.

Route Planning
Where to meet?

500 Alimaaq Dr. Kodiak, AK 99615

  1. Drive to the Near Island Bridge and head toward Near Island.

  2. After crossing the bridge veer right to go down the hill toward the harbor.

  3. Park in the lot connected with the beginning of the harbor close to the blue public restroom building.

  4. Walk to the public restroom building and wait for me to come greet you.

What can I expect during the tour?

We will be headed out to wherever I have last seen whales. This usually involves about 20-30 minutes of cruising at 20 knots followed by 45-60 minutes watching the whale(s). On the way, we will likely see sea lions, otters, puffin, eagles, and many different types of sea birds.

What should I wear?

I encourage you to wear layers. It is always a bit colder on the water. While you can certainly stay warm in the cozy cabin it is fun to be out in the open air.

Can the tour be extended?

You have the option to extend the tour by 1 hour if everyone in the group agrees. The extra hour often allows for extended viewing on whales that are putting on a show or extra time to find whales further out to sea. The cost of this extra hour is $300 which is split evenly between all guests.
